One day, a young person asked me to explain the mission of the Foundation on how the Scholarship Project Model to empower indigent but deserving talented
youths is implemented. After explaining the content and process on how the Scholarship Project Model is designed, he quipped to say,
"So, the scholar has to
pay back".
Then, I remember a book I bought from Barnes and Nobles entitled "Pay It Forward" (Hyde, 1999) that talks about a topic very much in line with
the Mission Statement of the Calantas Young Dreamers Foundation, Inc. (CYDFI Philippines), that is:
"to empower indigent but deserving talented youths living in abject
poverty found in Philippine rural areas like Bo. Calantas and
Nabuclod Aeta Community through a Scholarship Project Model,
with a methodology called "SWREM Theory In Action" that is
designed  to help them  help themselves so they can help incoming
scholars leading to breaking their cycle of poverty as they learn to
become socially responsible with implications, not only to personal
but community growth and development; and, to promote replication
advocacy of said Model in other communities beginning with
Benedicto, another barrio in Floridablanca, Pampanga".

Whereas, the "Pay-It-Forward" book describes its methodology in the
    following manner:
"It all started with the social studies teacher's extra-credit
assignment: come up with a plan to change the world for the better,
and do it. Twelve-year old Trevor McKinney began by doing
something good for three people. But instead of paying him back, he
asked them "to pay it forward" by doing a favor for three more
people, who in turn would help three others, and so on, each act a
link in a chain of human kindness".

The common theme expressed between the Pay It Forward" book and the
Mission Statement of the Foundation is the concept of "ripple effect" in
which they only differ on how it is presented and implemented. Their
difference is in the methodology! For the Calantas Young Dreamers
Foundation, Inc. (CYDFI Philippines), its methodology is called "Spiral
With Ripple Effect Motion" (a.k.a., SWREM Theory In Action); whereas
the book, it is "pay-it-forward" itself.
  • CYDFI Philippines has adopted SWREM Theory In Action as its
methodology since its establishment in August 2000 until its full
legal registration at the Securities and Exchange Commission in the
Philippines in August 2002 with a website address at www.
cydf821philippines.com  and a Pay It Forward Foundation has a
    website address at www.PayItForwardFoundation.org

It may sound unrealistic, ideal and visionary but "SWREM" as a concept
is simple, doable and excruciatingly challenging but rewarding and
fulfilling because if you are in search for a deeper meaning in life, this is
a good recipe! This can be your own crusade in search for a deeper
meaning in life where you don't expect anything in return but to feel good
about knowing that you participate in the process of helping to make a
SWREM Theory In Action: A Methodology On
Community-Based Scholarship Project Model
And Pay-It-Back VS Pay-It-Forward Model
difference in the life of youths to effect change for the better in a socially
responsible manner, based on the Principles of SWREM Theory In
    Action.

In a nutshell, when you believe in this methodology and translate it into
action, you are an other-centered person. The Calantas Young Dreamers
Foundation, Inc. believes in this methodology and has legally translated
and declared to put into action the "ripple effect" concept into reality by
using it as the core methodology of its operation to accomplish its
mission of "empowering indigent but deserving talented youths empower
themselves so they can empower others..." and addresses this by creating
a theory called "SWREM Theory In Action". SWREM Theory, as a
guiding principle in the operation of the Foundation, is implemented on a
longitudinal basis with a continuous loop characteristic. All it takes to
implement this visionary situation is to dip in and put in our Penny of
Goodness to share it with those who need it most. Remember, growth
begins with a penny of goodness! When each of us recognizes the power
of numbers bundled together in magnanimity, it can move on and change
the world for the better. This kind of approach is not expecting anything
in return but to feel good about knowing that you empower others to
empower themselves. This is about being and having an "other-centered
attitude" to help make a difference in the life of others, coupled with an
unconditional intent to really want to help make a difference in the life of
"indigent but deserving talented youths" through the Scholarship Project
Model espoused by the Calantas Young Dreamers Foundation, Inc. This
is where the Mission of the Foundation will be challenged for it will take
a lot of maximizing limited resources to make it happen by "empowering
indigent but deserving talented youths help them, help themselves, so they
can help incoming scholars leading to breaking their cycle of poverty as
they learn to become socially responsible". The CYDFI Founders
believe that the success of the Foundation to become a self-sustainable
non-profit entity is predictable due to the SWREM characteristic of the
methodology for which the book nicely puts it, "Pay It Forward". Thanks
to the author of the book, and so next time I will encounter a young
person again with the same question, I will simply tell him/her that:
"CYDFI Scholars don't pay back, they only pay forward".

SWREM Theory In Action is the key methodology towards predictability
of self-sustainability of the Calantas Young Dreamers Foundation, Inc. to
effect community growth and development in Philippine rural areas like
Calantas, Nabuclod and Benedicto, to name a few... for a start!
